Instructions:
The cape is worked back and forth in rows, starting at the neckline and working down toward the border.
Ch 48. The foundation chain should be a multiple of 2.
Row 1: Work 1 dc in the 4th ch from the hook. Ch 1, skip 1 ch, work 2 dc in the next ch. Repeat from * to * across the row.
Row 2: Turn. Work 2 sc over the first 2 dc, ch 1; work 2 hdc over the next 2 dc, ch 1. Continue working dc over dc, keeping ch 1 between each group. At the end of the row, work symmetrically to the beginning: 2 hdc and 2 sc.
Row 3 (dc increases): Turn and ch 3. Work 1 dc in each stitch of the first group, making the necessary increase to obtain 3 dc in the group. Ch 1. Continue across the row, increasing once in each group to obtain groups of 3 dc, always separated by ch 1.
Row 4: Turn. Work 3 sc, ch 1, 3 hdc, ch 1. Continue working dc over dc, keeping ch 1 between the groups. At the end of the row, work symmetrically to the beginning: 3 hdc and 3 sc.
Row 5 (dc increases): Turn and ch 3. Increase once in each dc group to obtain 4 dc in each group. Keep ch 1 between the groups.
Row 6: Turn. Work 4 sc, ch 1, 4 hdc, ch 1. Continue working dc over dc, keeping ch 1 between the groups. At the end of the row, work symmetrically to the beginning: 4 hdc and 4 sc.
Row 7 (increase in chain spaces): Turn and ch 3. Work dc over dc and increase the spaces between each group to ch 2.
Row 8: Turn. Work 4 sc, ch 2, 4 hdc, ch 2. Continue working dc over dc, keeping ch 2 between the groups. At the end of the row, work symmetrically to the beginning: 4 hdc and 4 sc.
Pattern Repeat
Row 9 (dc increases): Increase once in each dc group to obtain 5 dc in each group. Keep ch 2 between the groups.
Row 10: Work without increases, following the established pattern, beginning and ending the row with sc and hdc.
Row 11 (dc increases): Increase once in each dc group to obtain 6 dc in each group. Keep ch 2 between the groups.
Row 12: Work without increases, following the established pattern, beginning and ending the row with sc and hdc.
Row 13 (increase in chain spaces): Work dc over dc and increase the spaces between the groups to ch 3.
Row 14: Work without increases, following the established pattern, beginning and ending the row with sc and hdc.
Repeat Rows 9–14 once more, following the same increase sequence: on the dc increase rows, add 1 dc to each group; on the chain-space increase row, add 1 ch to each space between the groups.
At the end of the repeat, corresponding to Row 20, you will have 8 dc in each group, separated by ch-4 spaces.
From Row 21, stop increasing and work 9 more rows, keeping 8 dc in each group and ch-4 spaces between the groups. Alternate between a row worked in dc and a row beginning and ending with sc and hdc, as established in the previous rows.
Border
Row 1: Ch 3, skip 3 sts and, in the 4th st, work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the same stitch. Ch 4 and work 1 sc in the chain space from the previous row. Ch 4, skip 3 sts and, in the 4th st, work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc); ch 4, work 1 sc in the chain space from the previous row, ch 4. Repeat from * to * across the row. Finish with 1 dc.
Row 2: Turn and ch 1. In each motif, work 8 dc separated by ch 1, distributed as follows: 3 dc over the 3 dc from the previous row, 2 dc in the central ch-2 space, and 3 dc over the next 3 dc. Ch 1, work 1 sc in the sc from the previous row, ch 1. Repeat this sequence across all motifs. Finish with 1 sc.
Row 3: Turn and ch 1. In each of the 7 spaces of the motif from the previous row, work 2 dc, ch 1. Work 1 sc in the sc between motifs. Repeat across the entire row and finish with 1 sc.
Border and Side Edging
Row 4: From where the previous row ended, work sc evenly along the first side edge of the cape, around the neckline, and down the opposite side edge.
When you reach the lower border, work 1 sl st in the 2nd dc of the first 2-dc group, ch 6, skip 1 group of 2 dc and work 1 sl st in the 2nd dc of the next group; ch 6, skip 1 group of 2 dc and work 1 sl st in the 2nd dc of the next group; ch 6, skip 1 group of 2 dc and work 1 sl st in the 2nd dc of the next group.
Ch 1 and work 1 sl st in the 2nd dc of the first 2-dc group of the next motif. Repeat this sequence across the entire lower border.
Fasten off and weave in all ends on the wrong side using a tapestry needle.
