Size adjustments
The Olivia Cowl was designed as one size, with final measurements of approximately 24 cm (9.5 in) wide x 80 cm (31.5 in) long before assembly. However, you can easily adapt:
Width (height of the cowl): For a narrower cowl, make fewer chains for the foundation (e.g., 14 + 2 ch). For a wider and bulkier cowl, add more chains (e.g., 18 + 2 ch). Each 2 chains add or subtract about 3 cm (1.2 in) in width.
Length (around the neck): For a snugger fit, stop at about 70–75 cm (27.5–29.5 in) in length. For a looser drape, continue to 90–95 cm (35.5–37.5 in).
This way, you can customize the piece to your taste or the wearer’s preference.
Instructions
Foundation:
Ch 16 + 2 turning chains (= 24 cm / 9.5 in wide).
Work 1 hdc in the 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across.
Row 2 (Texture 1):
Ch 2, turn. Work 1 hdc in the 3rd loop only of each st across.
Row 3 (Texture 2):
Ch 2, turn. Work 1 hdc in the space between the sts across.
Repeat:
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 alternately until the piece measures 80 cm (31.5 in) in length.
Assembly
Fold the cowl into the shape shown in the assembly diagram (overlapping in a “V” at the front). With a tapestry needle, sew about 8 cm (3 in) along one side to secure the overlap. In the middle (where the cowl tends to open), make one small invisible stitch just to stabilize the shape.
Finishing
Sew 3 decorative buttons on the side of the cowl. No buttonholes are required (they are for decoration only). Weave in all ends and block lightly if needed.
